Side Tables

Start by considering the height of your sofa or armchair, the available floor space and what you want to keep within reach. A table with a top close to the height of your sofa arm generally makes drinks, books and remotes easier to access.

For tighter spaces, choose a small or narrow design that leaves enough room to move comfortably around your seating. If you regularly use a laptop, tablet or coffee beside the sofa, a C-shaped or movable table can provide greater flexibility.

Side table and end table are often used to describe similar pieces of furniture. An end table usually refers to a compact table placed at the end of a sofa, while a side table is a broader term for tables positioned beside sofas, armchairs or other seating.

When choosing between them, focus on the dimensions, height, storage and design rather than the name alone. The right table should fit comfortably into your room and keep everyday items within easy reach.

For compact living rooms, choose a small side table with a narrow footprint that provides useful surface space without blocking walkways. Round designs can work well where circulation space is limited, while C-shaped tables can sit closer to a sofa and make efficient use of the area around your seating.

Movable or nesting tables are also practical options when you want additional surfaces that can be repositioned or stored more easily.

It depends on what you want to keep nearby. A side table with a drawer is useful for smaller items such as remotes, chargers and reading glasses, helping keep the tabletop clear. Open shelves provide quick access to books, baskets or décor, while cabinet-style storage keeps more items hidden from view.

For smaller homes or living rooms with limited storage, choosing a design that combines surface space with drawers or shelves can be especially practical.
